Make Friends First

The first and most important thing you should remember in your social media training is that you’re on these sites to make friends. People on Facebook and such do NOT want to be sold to, so leave off the overtly sales-oriented talk. It can actually get you banned from these sites, as it’s considered bad etiquette. Create a fan page for your business and use it to have friendly conversations with people who are interested in what you offer. You’ll make some good online friends who will likely become customers at some point based solely on their interactions with you. If they like you, they’ll want to buy from you, plain and simple.

Your Account Often

Next, remember to use your account often. If you disappear from your account for long periods of time, your fans and followers will stop visiting your page and business will slack off. Check in on your social media accounts at least two to three times a week, though if you can do it every day, that’s even better.

Brand Yourself

The final step in your social media training is to brand yourself. Even though you’re not engaging in direct sales talk, you can still create a logo for your company and use it as your profile picture on your Facebook, MySpace and other social media accounts. This way, people will think of your logo when they think of you, and will recognize it when it appears in other places. It’s a wonderful way to create brand recognition, which can increase sales throughout all aspects of your business.

If they want to go a step further they can create a crazy video that they intend to upload to a video syndication site like youtube to be shared with thousands of people. The more outrageous the video is the more views it will get and the more it will be shared. Offline companies hires consultants sometimes for the sole purpose of creating a viral video, that is a video meant to be shared by a mass of people. It is creative and very cost affective, so it is an avenue that neither the online marketer nor the offline marketer trying to break into online marketing can ignore.

Advertisers will utilize any kind of marketing where hordes of people go. The will utilize content networks like blogs to get a steady reader base which might never see their content offline. The can fine tune it to fit the audience they want by creating video content that they feel will be liked by a certain demographic.

They can syndicate content so that it can easily be shared. They can utilize rss feeds of other competitors so that they can keep up with things and track what their competitors are doing or what necessary adjustments they may need to make in order to stay on top of their game. They can utilize social media sites with unique content delivery systems so that people can keep up with the latest happenings with that company or track certain promotions that the company might have to generate interest. They can also use bookmarking sites so that their digital content can be voted on and the traffic leveraged to create more buzz around their product or services.

Making the most use of the Internet

The bottom line is that both online and offline companies are making the most use of the internet as possible to get their piece of the internet pie. With so many things dividing people interest companies have to work hard to keep their customers and do whatever it takes to keep their particular product or service the subject of interest. Even if it mean being controversial.

Too many people are online these days for advertisers not to allocate a large part of their budget towards internet marketing. And internet marketing does not mean simply throwing up pay per click ads on some of the search engines, but getting your message infront of highly targeted buyers who would otherwise never see what you were selling. So online marketers and offline marketers looking to get in must understand that their success or failure whether they want to believe it or not, is dependent on how much of an online presence they are able to have. And even if they do well offline, they can always create more business by establishing a strong online presence.

MySpace has millions of users, and this reason alone makes it quite the attractive means of making money on the internet for online marketers. Even with the competition from Facebook, MySpace still runs strong, and there are still plenty of “gold rush” opportunities left for those with a little dedication, creativeness, and motivation.

The main thing you need to understand about MySpace marketing is the fact that not everything (product wise) will convert well. If you want to stand any chance at making money on MySpace, there are certain niches that you should probably stick to, and they’ll give you the best shot at actually making any revenue.

MySpace demographics are primarily teens and young adults, so obviously, promoting hair replacement affiliate offers isn’t going to give you the best ROI (return on investment), and if you don’t do the research, you could end up losing a lot of money.

Below are five niches that you should probably stick to if you’re going to market on MySpace. These ten cater to the MySpace demographics rather well, so if you get creative enough, you may stand a chance at cashing in.

1. T-shirt affiliate programs (teenagers love t-shirts, especially creative and stupid ones!) There are plenty of T-shirt websites that have affiliate programs, or you may even own one yourself – either way, MySpace is a great place to push it.

2. Entertainment and humor websites go over really well (the trick is to be unique, think of sites like Ebaumsworld and College-humor – they are wildly popular because they have tons of hilarious content.) This is a very crowded niche, but if done correctly, it could be a cash cow.

3. Free Music/ Free Games – If you have an online arcade that is well stocked with flash games; MySpace is the perfect place to promote it. Same goes for a music download site, perhaps you have a CPA (cost per action) site that you’re affiliated with and want to promote – there is no better place than MySpace.

4. MySpace Resource Sites – This one is a no-brainer. If you have a hot new MySpace resource site, one of the easiest and quickest ways to get traffic is to promote the heck out of it on MySpace. In this situation, word-of-mouth is your best friend. Teens love to talk and recommend stuff to each other.

5. Free Ringtones – Again, teens and young adults are still ringtone junkies, and since teens and young adults make up MySpace’s user base, it’s an obvious place to promote your ringtone site, or perhaps an opportunity to funnel MySpace users to a CPA “Free Ringtone for Your Email Address” type of site.

6. Other Social Networking Sites – Maybe you’ve decided to take on the big dogs and start your own social networking site. Although your chances of success are pretty slim (due to market saturation), what better place to get members than the king itself – MySpace! Make sure you emphasize why your site is better, and talk about the benefits of them trying it out. Who knows, you may just get lucky!

The main difference between Facebook marketing, and MySpace marketing, is the fact that with MySpace, you aren’t allowed to blatantly sell or promote anything without staying under the radar a bit. With Facebook, there are literally several ways you can cash in ethically and easily right on their site. This, and due to the fact that MySpace is “sooo 2006”, is one of the reasons that Facebook has recently surpassed MySpace in traffic.

That’s quite the milestone to reach, and we’re talking about millions of potential customers.

If you’re kicking around the idea of launching some kind of marketing campaign on Facebook, but aren’t sure where to start, here are five different ways to kick-start your brain:

1. Create a Facebook Blog – There are hundreds of thousands of these already, but to truly take advantage of this, you need to be unique and creative (which goes the same for any method mentioned here). Once you have a large audience, you can then turn around and sell ads and sponsorships to marketers who want to promote their products.

2. Consulting – There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of companies out there that would kill for a good Facebook Application developer. Since Facebook is so new, the supply of great developers is low. If you have this skill, you would be stupid not to explore this opportunity. Rumors are that this skill is a $200-$500 an hour gig. See the potential? If you don’t have this skill yet, then I highly suggest you learn it!

3. Develop Your Own Apps – Some might say, “Why develop an App for someone else, when you could do it for yourself?” – Good argument. In that case, why are you still reading this and not working on the hottest new application that everyone will want to share? Grow you users to the tens of thousands (and more), and partner with an Ad network to sell advertising. It’s almost a license to print money, and you’ll be happy you took the time to do it. Imagine if it made it to the top ten Facebook Applications page – you would be pretty well off for quite some time!

4. Facebook PPC – If you’re skilled in the PPC arena and familiar with Adwords and YSM, then it’s safe to say that you could take that valuable skill and tap into Facebook’s own PPC program. Many people have made small fortunes doing this already – the trick is knowing what to promote. But what makes it so attractive is the fact that you can actually dial in your demographics down to sub-level, eg –“Canadian Women, Ages 18-35, Single, Who Like Classic Rock”. That’s pretty neat, and if you know how to work it, then you could be padding your bank account as we speak.

5. Write A Book About Facebook – Yeah, it really is a good idea, especially if you know the Development side of things. A well written Facebook Application Development book would probably fetch the author millions, and would earn him/her instant credibility over night. There aren’t many (if any) on the market yet, so there is still room for people who want to take it one. Publishing companies who know what’s hot and what’s not would jump all over you if you had one in development. Get to it!
