Despite what you may believe about Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and other similar sites, they are not just for kids to hang out on playing games and sharing silly pictures. They are also very powerful business tools. Called social media (or Web 2.0) sites, these websites offer you an unprecedented opportunity to expand your business, gain new customers, and increase your profits like never before. It’s all thanks to the magic of interactivity. These sites connect you with your customers in very direct ways. Through them, you become not just a non-corporeal entity behind a computer screen, you become a real person they can talk to, get to know, and trust. People buy from those whom they trust. That’s why you need social media training if you want to really thrive in the 21st century business environment.

Make Friends First

The first and most important thing you should remember in your social media training is that you’re on these sites to make friends. People on Facebook and such do NOT want to be sold to, so leave off the overtly sales-oriented talk. It can actually get you banned from these sites, as it’s considered bad etiquette. Create a fan page for your business and use it to have friendly conversations with people who are interested in what you offer. You’ll make some good online friends who will likely become customers at some point based solely on their interactions with you. If they like you, they’ll want to buy from you, plain and simple.

Your Account Often

Next, remember to use your account often. If you disappear from your account for long periods of time, your fans and followers will stop visiting your page and business will slack off. Check in on your social media accounts at least two to three times a week, though if you can do it every day, that’s even better.

Brand Yourself

The final step in your social media training is to brand yourself. Even though you’re not engaging in direct sales talk, you can still create a logo for your company and use it as your profile picture on your Facebook, MySpace and other social media accounts. This way, people will think of your logo when they think of you, and will recognize it when it appears in other places. It’s a wonderful way to create brand recognition, which can increase sales throughout all aspects of your business.

You’ve probably wondered why it seems everywhere you go everyone is talking about Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and social media and all that type of techie stuff. If indeed you have not then here are some reasons you must entertain Social Media usage.

When you analyse the use of Facebook a social networking site for instance, you would discover that there are about 260 million active users already registered. This includes over 130 million people logging in each and every day. In fact the fastest growing age category on Facebook is 35 years and over. This is the medium where your kids could chat with their friends about what sport to go and watch the next day. You could take advantage of this great meeting place by becoming the favourite of people who visit. This is a great avenue for an international company because over 70% of all Facebook registered users are from outside the United States of America.

Twitter another social media site registered a growth rate of 752%. This is tremendous Social Media usage. In December 2008 alone they received one million visitors to their site. However sixty percent quit this social site within their very first month of usage. This is because a lot of people are not in the know as to how to utilize this opportunity to enhance their business. On Twitter there are fantastic tools which are developed by individuals which if utilized can turn your Social Media usage on automatic gear. Twitter received about 23 million special visitors in June 2009 only. All kinds of people across the world are using this social networking site. In fact it could be very chatty and sociable. Just take pains to learn it and it could prove useful in the long run.

There are other statistics that depict incredible Social Media usage. For instance Facebook and MySpace each had about fifty nine million people using their sites. Going forward Facebook has far outgrown MySpace to become the principal in the social media industry. With about sixty nine million users Facebook was ranked number one in the social media industry only in January 2009.On a monthly basis, MySpace gets about eighty million visitors while Facebook gets a whooping 1.2 billion in monthly visits only.

There are a number of other social media sites some are which are worth trying. You could start with any of the fore mentioned and your Social Media usage would never be the same.
