Love it or hate it, social media (or Web 2.0 as it’s more often referred to) is taking the Web by storm. You see it in the news, in the press, hear about it on the radio – it’s a true Internet Phenomenon. It gives people the ability to communicate with their network of contacts in whatever way they desire, whether it be via blogs, micro-blogs, videos or even photos. With over 250 million people worldwide using social media in their daily lives, it’s not something that any online business can afford to ignore!
We’re going to take a look at 3 of the most popular social media sites and to consider why your business should bother with them. You’ve probably heard of each of these sites already and have an opinion of them. If that opinion is negative, then I sincerely hope that what I’m about to reveal to you is enough to make you reconsider!

YouTube

With over 78 million videos, YouTube is currently the largest video sharing site on the Internet. It’s been calculated that if you sat down to watch all of these videos, it would take more than 400 years! Added to that is the 10+ hours of new video that are uploaded every minute!
YouTube is great for businesses as not only does it give you a platform for sharing your videos, it also acts as a host. In this way, you can upload your videos for maximum exposure, and embed them back into your own websites without the need to host huge video files with your web host.
If you can create an entertaining video, the potential exists for it to go viral and drive huge quantities of traffic to your site. Used well, this strategy can be used very effectively to increase your profits.

Facebook

Facebook has over 175 million users, being made up largely of affluent, technically savvy people in their late 20’s to early 30’s – typically a prime target market for Internet marketers! Users will often logon several times a day to update their status and catch up with what their friends are doing. If you can engage with Facebook users and gain their trust, you’ll find it a very lucrative channel through which to market!

Twitter

Twitter is the ultimate micro-blogging site! The concept is to post something interesting in 140 characters or less. It’s hard to know exactly how many users are on Twitter, as the official figure isn’t publicized, but it’s estimated to be in excess of 6 million. Like Facebook, these users tend to be affluent, young professionals and as the rate of growth accelerates, this market will be very profitable if approached in the right manner.
One thing’s clear: social media is the way forward for reaching our target markets. The question is simply whether you will bother.

The latest social media trends in 2009 are by and large quite different from that in 2008. The global recession that hit the economic sector recently has influenced the social media trends of 2009 heavily. The recession poses a new kind of economic scenario and hence the older business models will no longer be in context with what is happening in the economic scene these days.
So in 2009, new models have to be developed. There will also be a large demand for online availability of the retailers, cars, travel, real estate and other sectors. Online availability means quick and direct access and in today’s world where nobody has hardly a second to waste, there will be very few who will be willing to grapple through the long series of phone lines before reaching their required destination.

Social networking sites like FaceBook, Twitter, Yelp, etc. will be the new means of expanding one’s business and earning considerable profits. This is possible because the moment someone buys something from the businessman’s company and finds the deal very lucrative he will spread the message around through the site and this network would keep on getting wider and wider and the number of consumers for that particular product would reach leaps and bounds in no time.

if you’ve never given a second thought about social media impact perhaps you should. If things keep up the way the have then pretty soon there will be no such thing as paper boys. Almost everything you want to know can be found online nowadays and usually the content delivery method is quicker and with much more detail then the offline newspapers can deliver them.

Free Online Content For Everyone, Anytime

It is becoming increasingly difficult for many newspapers and magazines to compete with the barrage of online content that is out there because why would people want to pay for something that they can get for free online? It only makes sense right?
And what about all those old columns that people used to love to read in the papers? People used to place value on some of those opinions.

But now there is a little thing called blogs and this content network doesn’t care who the original content creator was. It can be anybody with an opinion or who just like to write. Look at Perez Hilton the owner of one of the most trafficked content delivery systems out there. He makes so much money a month just from advertising alone that he has advertisers knocking down his door to put ads on his site. All this guy had was a dream and a silly easy to make blog. Now he is one of the most well known producers of online media content there is. People recognize his name wherever he goes. How can a boring newspaper compete with that?

User Generated Content

Also with the popularity of blogs you are able to also see user generated content. With advice columns in newspapers you had to write to the person and then hope that they used you in there next writing. On blogs, even the most popular ones you can leave multiple paragraphs of information in the form of a comment to be seen instantly upon the approval of the blog owner. Some people visit these blogs just to see this alone. With that kind of interaction with users Perez Hilton is the perfect example of what blog syndication can do for you. Now everyone thinks they can be a blogger. There are millions of bloggers out there and they are free to setup. Anyone can go to blogger or wordpress and begin generating their own unique content within minutes.

I used Perez Hilton’s blog as an example when it comes to what advertisers are willing to pay to put their ads in front of a large crowd of buyers, especially the younger crowd who is obsessed with anything pop culture or about their favorite celebrity. Popular people with content syndication can make or break the sale of products by simply mentioning them on their blogs. That is the power they hold over the readers of their blogs. People will often go to websites to do a little research on a particular product first. And they are not researching to see if the product itself is good but what other people are saying about it. If the right people give it a good word then some people will buy no further questions asked.

How Can Newspapers Compete?

So how are Newspaper supposed to compete for that advertising dollar? They can’t now people do not have to be experts to write about something and if they can get the following then they can get possibly more readers then their local newspaper. How can a seventy five cent newspaper compete with a content system like that Buler anyone Buler?
Social media impact may not always be obvious to the casual onlooker but it is being felt in many places, traditional media that are slow to adopt will go the same way as the dinasours.

Remember the days where if you wanted to talk to somebody you had to pick up a phone and call them, or how about going out to social gatherings to meet up with people and make new friends and acquaintances. Well those days seem like the stone ages compared to the new avenues we have today.

Anyone who wishes to be sociable, even the socially impaired, can take advantage of numerous social media tools that are out there. Having as many friends and contacts as you wish is now push button. Whatever you want to talk about or express to the social media community at large is right at your fingertips. let’s take a look at some of the possibilities which appeared unreal just a few years ago.

Social Media Communities

Social media communities or social media sites, whatever you wish to call them, enable you to plug into a group of people who all have similar likes and interests. You are able to plug in and find the people who are like minded as you are. You are able to create whole online profiles that tell the world your likes and dislikes. What you did that day, where you live, your relationships status or even your personal beliefs. You then seek out people with similar interests in the hopes that that person will add you to their list of contacts so that they can connect with you whenever you wish.

There are various types of social media sites to get involved with, all with different capabilities when it comes to how you are able to express yourself. Take you tube for instance. This is one social media tool that enables you to create videos about whatever you want and then post it online for the whole world to see. People are then able to come on and view your video to determine if it is good or not. The more views and good ratings it gets the more popular it becomes.

Social Media Marketing

Advertisers are aware of this too as they have just recently started to apply what could be called social media marketing to these types of sites. Now whenever you watch a video there is advertising displayed at the bottom of the video. And obviously the more views the video has the more the advertiser probably pays to have his or her ad seen there.

Understand that not only is do these advertisers understand the power of what could be called the social media impact, they are even beginning to use these avenues to reach audiences they could have never dreamed of in the past and with the blitz of all the social media pr of sites like twitter, they are finding never ending ways to connect and shape the way we communicate for generations to come. If your still not convinced of the influence, call me, oh I mean Tweet me.
